Haydn Williams, inaugural WAIT director 1967-1979
Western Australia’s former director of technical education was one of the key players in WAIT’s formation. As its first director, he built solid teaching and administrative foundations and led the institution through a dramatic period of growth: WAIT opened with an enrolment of approximately 2,800 students and, by the end of his tenure, this had grown to more than 12,000. With his broad view of technology, which embraced the arts as well as the sciences, Williams quickly established WAIT’s reputation for innovation and for integrity and social inclusion. He is widely recognised for his contribution to the development of education in Western Australia.
